A visit to CD recycling unit (office)

We the students of krmm, Abiraami and Nithya of class IX and our teacher Mrs. Padma who accompanied us to Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd, met the proprietor, Mr. John Robert. We had an interview with Mr. Robert regarding the CD recycling process.

Below are the questions by us and the answers given by him. It was very kind of him to answer all the questions with enormous amount of patience.


1.     How can CDs be disposed or recycled?

You should not dispose the CDs, since there is lot of plastic content in it which is hazardous to living beings. It has to be recycled using a shredding method, wherein the plastics can be recycled.

2.     What is the lasting solution efficient disposal of CDs?

Lasting solutions is that there are three steps:-
·        REUSE- Can be done for, instance in the manufacture of products mainly reflectors in cycles, autos and bikes.
·        REMODELING- Like tea coasters mainly to keep tea cups and tea kettles (pots) on a table.
·         RECYCLE- Extract plastics and then use it for making pet bottles and even bottle caps etc;
3.     Are there any recycling facilities in Chennai?

There are lots of recycling units in Chennai, However there is no exclusive CD recycling unit in Chennai. But it will be a part of a bigger recycling plant wherein apart from CDs other things also will be recycled, like electronics etc;

4.     Are their health related issues in disposal of CDs?

Yes, it is hazardous to health. For instant a chemical called silver bromide which is in CDs is harmful when it is dissolved and when it gets into the earth, it can pollute the environment.

5.     In how many methods can CDs be recycled? And what are they?

The most common method of recycling CDs is by shredding. They melt CDs and make it into ½ inch granules. To a supplementary question whether the melting process will release poisonous gases? Mr. John Robert said that it can be contained into a compact area and handled. He also clarified that melting by itself will not release any poisonous gas, only burning of CDs will do so.

6.     Should the employees involved in recycling, disposal .etc; wear a protective gear or any protective clothing while doing so?

The shields and certificates which the recycling unit got.
Yes, that is absolutely necessary. For instance OHSAS18001 certification is given for our unit. (OHSAS stands for Occupational Health and Safety)

7.     Have your employees suffered any accidents or suffered health problems, while handling CDs?

No, we are ISO14001 certified.

8.     How many CDs do you recycle per month?

10,000 - 15,000 CDs.

9.     What are the methods used in your firm for recycling or disposal of CDs?

We use shredding and smelting methods. And our unit in this regard is in Hyderabad.

10 . Do you have any other information which would be useful to us?

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board is the apex unit which oversees all 
pollution related issues. You are advised to visit their official website which is informative.
